controlling blood glucose

    Cards (7)

    • glucagon: hormone produced by alpha cells in islets of langerhans in pancreas that increase blood glucose levels
    • gluconeogenesis: happens in the liver - conversion of non carbohydrates to glucose
happens when glucose supply is exhausted
    • glycogenesis: happens in the liver - conversion of glucose into glycogen
    • glycogenolysis: happens in the liver - breakdown of glycogen to glucose
    • if blood glucose is too low, you may not have enough glucose for respiration
    • if blood glucose is too high, it can disrupt water potential of blood
    • blood glucose conc. increases when:
      • carbs are broken down into monosaccharides in small intestine and absorbed into blood
      • glycogen stores in liver are broken down to release glucose
      • when other substances are converted into glucose
