Lit Crit

Cards (2)

  • Worsley - ‘It was Austen’s novels and particularly the combative Lizzy Bennet - which would open up a rich seam of nineteenth century female characters who were not afraid to speak their minds.’
Elizabeth Bennet speaks her mind and is not afraid of her personality being embarrassing, even when she trenched in the mud in a long walk to see her sister Jane and did not care about Caroline‘s negative views of her.
  • Austen - ’Pictures of perfection make me sick and wicked.’
She makes Elizabeth’s character flawed and creates moments of embarrassment for Elizabeth (through Wickham) to express the feelings experienced after embarrassment.
