  • reptiles, fish
  • body temperature cannot be controlled internally
  • dependent on external temperature
  • variable metabolic rate
  • generate little heat themselves
• endotherms


  • external environment has less of an effect on body temperature
  • activity is not dependent on external temperature
  • may change behaviour to maintain temperature
• ectotherms


  • active at higher temperatures, less at lower temps
  • change their behaviour to maintain their body temperature
