classical conditioning- unconditioned stim, (being attacked eg), has been paired with a neutral stim such as a dog, dog then becomes conditioned stimulus- elicits conditioned response of fear even though no attacking is taking place
operant conditioning- in order to reduce anxiety experienced the individual will avoid phobic stim, the anxiety reduction negatively reinforces individual to avoid object. therefore never face fear or overcome it
