  • ‘A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year.’
    Mr Bingley and Darcy arriving in Longbourn. It is known before Mr Bingley even arrives that he is rich and single showing that word and rumours circulate quickly.
  • ‘The report which was in general circulation within five minutes after his entrance, of having ten thousand a year.’
    The first thing that is noticed about Darcy is his wealth and large fortune, and he already seems to have a reputation very shortly after arriving in Meryton.
  • Pemberley: Miss Bingley spreads rumours about Darcy’s grand house, although these turn out to be true later in the novel.
    ‘Charles, when you build your house, I wish it may be half as delightful as Pemberley.’
