• 'For the green turtle with her pulsing burden.'- urgent shows how babies are going to be born but there's an unsafe enviroment.
• 'nest of sickness.'- a nest is supposed to be a safe and secure place.
• 'in his funeral silk.'- metaphor a bird who is covered in oil that will eventually kill it.
• 'veil of iridescence on the sand'...'the shadow on the sea.'- sibilance- 'veil' and 'shadow'- connotations of dark oil --> the oil will eventually kill the animals (bird).
• 'ocean's lap with its mortal stain.'- 'mortal' connotations of human, show how this is human inflicted, humans are the problem.
• 'soldier with his uniform of fire.'- Clarke (author) is lamenting the soldier's suffering.
• 'For the gunman and the armourer.'- these people profited from war, they only care about the money not the people. (selfish).
• 'For'...'For'...'For'...'For'...- the anaphora of 'For'- shows a list of 'objects' who have been affected by war, its not just the soldiers.
• 'stink of anger'- sensory imagery- suggests darkness -> evil-> loss of innocence.
• 'sun put out'...'scalded ocean'...'blazing well'...'vengeance, and the ashes of language.'- all adjectives are to do with destruction. Clarke is concerned that humanity dies during war.
