• 'frowning barrel of his gun'- personification, dead soldiers weapons are more powerful than him.
• 'like the entry of a demon.'- simile associates war with hell.
• 'who has put Steffi: Vergismeinnicht.', makes it personal, show how war is between humans even the enemy has a life back home.
• 'we see him with almost content, abased and seeming to have paid and mocked by his own equipment' -> the soldiers take pleasure, believes he deserved it. Personification of the equipment -> irony.
