Interference

• The interference theory of forgetting states that forgetting occurs because memories that are stored at different times in the LTM disrupt each other
• Information in the LTM is more or less permanent but we can't access it

  This theory occurs when 2 or more memories interfere with one another making it harder for us to locate / access them
• What is Proactive Interference?

  Proactive interference is when an older memory that is learnt first interferes with a newer memory
• What is Retroactive Interference?

  When a newer memory that is learnt second interferes with an older one
