nervous + endocrine system

Cards (9)

  • what is the nervous system divided into?
    central nervous system (CNS)
    peripheral nervous system (PNS)
  • what are the two main functions of the nervous system?
collect, process and respond to information in the environment.
coordinate working of different organs and cells in the body
  • central nervous system
made up of brain and spinal cord. origin of all complex commands and decisions
  • peripheral nervous system
made up of the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system. sends information to the CNS from the outside world. transmits messages from the CNS to muscles and glands
  • autonomic nervous system
governs vital functions in the body such as breathing. transmits information from the internal bodily organs. involuntary
  • somatic nervous system
governs muscle movement and receives info from sensory receptors. transmits info from receptor cells to sense organs to the CNS that directs muscles to act
  • endocrine system
instructs glands to release hormones directly into the blood stream
  • fight or flight response
endocrine and ANS work together during a stressful event
ANS changes from a normal parasympathetic state to a sympathetic state in response the pituitary gland being activated
  • adrenaline
stress hormone released from adrenal medulla.
triggers physiological changes which creates fight or flight
