-the average glucose over the past 2/3 months
-used for the diagnosis of diabetes type 1
    • HbA1c values
      nomal - below 42mmol/mol
      diabetes - 48mmol/mol and above
      pre diabetes - 42-48mmol/mol
    • Fasting blood glucose
-fasting is when no food or fluid is eliminated from the body for at least 8 hrs.
-in a fasted state, glucagon is released to increase glucose levels and then insulin will also be released as part of regulation and use of glucose. In diabetics, there is no regulation so there is still high glucose and there is no insulin to uplift the excess and utilise it.
    • fasting glucose ranges(WHO guidlines)
      Normal ranges - 3.9-5.5mmol/l
      pre diabetic - 5.6-6.9mmol/l
      diabetes - 7.0mmol/l
