• • mutations in bacteria produce new strains
  • so, strains may be resistant to anitbiotics and not killed
  • survive and reproduce, so, population of resistant strain rises
  • resistant strain will spred due to people not ebing immune and no effective treatment
• reducing rate of antibiotic resistant strains:

  • doctors should not prescribe antibiotics for viral or non-serious infections
  • patients should complete course of antibiotics so all bacteria killed and non survive to mutate and form resistant strains
  • agricultural use of antibiotics should be restricted
  • antibiotics can be given to animals to stop them from becoming ill
  • development of resistant bacteria can spread to humans from animals
• • development of new antibiotics is costly and slow
