Aerobic & Anaerobic respiration

    Cards (3)

    • Aerobic respiration
      • process that happens when oxygen is availble
      • Series of reactions caused by enzymes
      • Through this respiration - cell gets energy to do work or grow
      • Equation = Glucose + Oxygen turns into Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
      • Energy released in form of ATP molecules
      • Water & Carbon dioxide - waste products 0 body must get rid of
    • Anaerobic respiration
      • What happens when there is not enough oxygen available
      • Less efficient that aerobic respiration - less ATP is produced per molecule of glucose. Because glucose muscle isn't fully broken down
      • Equation = Glucose turns into Lactic Acid
      Advantages
      • Muscles - release energy for short period e.g. 100m sprints
      Disadvantages
      • Lactic acid - released - harmful to body - lactic acid can cause pain (cramp)
      • Not suitable for activities that release energy over a long period e.g. 400m run
    • Differences - aerobic - releases more energy slowly, anaerobic, less energy but quicker
