    Cards (151)

    • What is a tension force?
      pulling or stretching something apart
    • What is a compression force?
      pressing or squeezing something together
    • What is a torsion force?
twist the ends of something in the opposite directions.
    • What is a bending force?
type of force that causes something to bend
    • What is a shear force?
two things that are opposite each other slide past each other when pushed together
    • What is an example of a tension force?
in tug of war the rope is under tension
    • What is an example of a compression force?
      sitting on a chair leg
    • What is an example of a torsion force?
      a propeller
    • What is an example of a bending force?
      when a load is applied
    • What is an example of a shear force?
      scissors
    • Why does food packaging need to be printable?
so that the manufacture can advertise clearly and the customer can see information about what they are buying
    • Why does food packaging need to be waterproof?
to prevent food getting wet and going off
    • Why does food packaging need to be airtight?
      to prevent food going off
    • Why does food packaging need to be thermal?
to keep the food hot so will have good thermal properties
    • Why does food packaging need to be greaseproof?
to prevent staining and seepage during transportation
    • Why does food packaging need to be sustainable?
      reusing recycling products
    • Why might someone have a printable food package?
cheap packaging as a layer of white paper can laminated onto it for printing
    • What material could someone have for waterproof food package?
Duplex board has a more waterproof coating on one side to make it more resistant to moisture
    • What material could someone have for airtight food package?
Tetrapacks combines plastic, foil and card to maintain the freshness of the product
    • What material could someone have for thermal food package?
foil lined paper and board have good thermal properties
    • What material could someone have for greaseproof food package?
Duplex board has a more waterproof coating on one side to make it resistant to grease
    • What material could someone have for sustainable food package?
      Laminating materials
    • What is a reference point and why is it used?
a point you measure from like the corner of an object to help improve accuracy
    • What is a template?
a shape to draw or cut around with consistent results each time making it quicker and easier
    • What is a jig?
helps position work or tools accurately to speed up and simplify the manufacturing process but it takes a long time to make a jig
    • What is a stencil?
a thin piece of material with a design cut out of it so you can paint over the stencil and pulling the stencil off
    • What is a die?
block of metal with a special shape that is used for shaping other pieces of metal like coins and they come in all different shapes and sizes
    • What is a mould?
a container that you pour a liquid or soft substance into which then becomes solid in same shapes as container, allowing many of the same product to be made identically
    • What is a production aid?
something you can use to make a job quicker
    • Explain the process of die cutting
      - the method used to cut out complex shapes from paper and board industry
      - the die cutter is a big cutter which is pressed down into the paper or board with several tonnes of force to cut out into the required shape
      - as well as cutting blades the dies can also have creasing blades and blades which can perforate the paper and board
    • Explain the process of offset lithography printing
      - aluminium printing plates are chemically treated so that the printed area attracts grease and repels water and the non-printing area attracts water and repels grease
      - one printing plate is produced for each of the four colours (cyan, yellow, black, magenta)
      - the paper passes through each of the coloured printing plates in turn
    • What are the 4 colours used in printing?
      cyan, magenta, yellow, black
    • Define Quality Control
ensures products are manufactured to a high enough standard
    • What are registration marks?
used to ensure that all 4 printing plates are lined up in order to produce a crisp clean printed image
    • What are colour bars?
helps measure the density of the ink
    • What are crop marks?
shows where the page needs to be cut
    • What is meant by the term tolerance when discussing quality control?
a way of checking whether a component is within an acceptable range of measurements, it is normally given as an upper (+) and lower (-) measurement (such as +/-2mm for a product)
    • If a 100mm length of string has a tolerance of +/- 5mm, what are the lower and upper lengths which would be acceptable?
      lower = 95mm
      upper = 105
    • What are paper and board made from
      cellulose fibres
    • Explain the process of making paper and board
      1. cutting down maple, burch, saft wood trees
      2. debarking
      3. chipping
      4. ood chips are sorted and washed
      5. chips are pulped into a paste
      6. bleached into white and sized
      7. spread out onto a mesh to press water out by a heat roller
      8. surface size and coating applied
