• TRUMAN DOCTRINE - 1947

  CAUSES:

  • long telegram
  • soviet takeover of eastern europe - spread of communism ( eastern bloc / sphere of influence )
  • poor state of european economy - many countries were in ruins ( almost bankrupt )
  • spread of communism = threat to the west

  WHAT WAS IT - significant speech - first public attack

  • america was now committed to a policy of containment ( preventing spread of communism )
  • usa would provide economic and military aid to those countries at risk of communism
• MARSHALL PLAN - 1948-52

  
  

  WHAT WAS IT?

  • economic aid to european countries damaged by war - stop the spread of communism
  • usa gave 13 billion aid to 16 countries in europe
  • only western countries recieved (Stalin banned european countries form accepting it )

  CONSEQUENCES :

  • stalin believed truman doctrine + marshall plan were ways to spread power of the usa
  • led to creation of comniform 1947
  • led to creation of comecon 1949
