• 4 million African American slaves in the USA lived at the outbreak of the civil war in 1861
• 13th Amendment 1865 = partially ended slavery in the constitution
• 1865 - southern states surrendered so slaves became free. their new status as freedmen.
• abolitionists were members of the movement , largely in the North , which saw slavery as moral evil and socially and economically backwards
