  • Emotional and Social Development à Disinhibited attachment behaviours were particularly prevalent in children adopted after 6 months. These behaviours included indiscriminate friendliness, lack of stranger anxiety, and difficulty forming secure attachments with primary caregivers.
  • At age 11, around 54% of children adopted after 6 months exhibited disinhibited attachment behaviours, compared to fewer than 20% of those adopted before 6 months. Some of these behaviours persisted into adolescence, highlighting the challenges in overcoming early emotional deprivation.
  • The British control group rarely displayed these attachment difficulties, supporting the conclusion that these behaviours were linked to the institutionalisation experience.
