distribution of population

Cards (7)

  • Quadrat: A square grid used to measure the abundance of organisms in a habitat.
  • We use quadrats to sample the population of an area, plants
  • Square quadrat: allows you to count the abundance of each species present
  • Systematic/random sampling: use of co ordinates to determine where to place the quadrat.
The probability of any particular area should be equal.
The smaller the size of the sample the estimate is less accurate.
  • If the area is too small repeat the sample in random areas atleast ten times.
  • population = area of field
    ----------------- x mean abundance
    area of quadrat
  • A belt/line transect is use for small areas e.g river banks
