this quote is said by the witches, it gives us the idea of "appearance vs reality" because King Duncan replaces Macdonald(traitor) with Macbeth who is courages and loyal, only to be betrayed and murdered by Macbeth. They speak in oxymoron because they are going to disrupt the chain of events

"Brave Macbeth-Well he deserves that name"
  • What is Ross trying to say about Macbeth?
Ross is trying to say that Macbeth put in the hard work, he is seen as a very commendable person from the very start of the play, people view him highly. Macbeth is willing to do things others are not, for example murdering the king which is committing regicide
  • What does Patriarchy mean?
Patriarchy is male dominance, men hold all the power meanwhile women hold no power at all and the women are largely excluded from it.
  • What do the witches mean by "Something wicked this way comes"?
At this point in the play Macbeth is king, this quote is a juxtaposition, "Wicked" connotes being malevolent and heinous, meanwhile being a king connotes authority and being exceptional at what you do and being commendable, yet somehow Macbeth is King but fits more under being wicked. This ties into the theme of appearance vs reality, in appearance Macbeth is the King of Scotland, but in reality he is the false hero, a fraud, evil, malevolent. The witches also objectify him by describing him as "Something"
  • Part 2
, the technique being used here is chremamorphism, the witches objectify Macbeth viewing him as someone they can simply exploit, they are fully aware they have control over Macbeth's mind, transforming him from the hero to the villain, they dehumanise him and view him as something entirely evil "wicked", this reflects back onto how the supernatural manipulate and completely change Macbeth as a character
