Fish farming

Cards (11)

  • What fishes are most commonly fished
The more commercial species such as salmon and cod
  • What are some fishes used for
    To make animal feed
  • How do Farmers maximise the amount of good quality of fish
    • suppling the best food and conditions for rapid growth
    • prevention of pests and diseases
    • Control of predators
  • What does fish farming look like,
    Fish farming
  • What are the methods used to maximise food production
    1. Feed regularly with small, amounts of high protein food
    2. Keep predators out by use nets and keeping fish in a cage
    3. Oxygenate water and ensure it is clean and unpolluted by moving the cage to a new area away from waste
    4. Addition of pesticides and fungicides
    5. Separate fish into different age groups and selective breeding
    6. Biological control eg wrasses
  • Why is feeding regularly with small amounts of high protein food used
    • high protein food pellets promote rapid growth
    • Regular feeding with small amounts ensures eaten and avoid decaying food ( and therefore bacteria is using up oxygen)
    • Food may also contain antibiotics to kill bacteria and therefore control disease
    • Fish do not have to search for food so energy is conserved
  • Which is keeping predators out by nets and keeping fish in a cage used
    • Aerial predators are unable to reach the fish
    • Underwater predators
    • Nets also keep out other fish that would eat the food
  • Why is oxygenate the water and ensure it is clean and unpolluted by moving cage to a new area away from waste used?
    • good supply of oxygen for respiration of the fish
    • Limits dead organic matter to prevent bacteria using up all the oxygen
    • Move the cage to new area, away from waste avoids decaying with the bacteria using up oxygen
  • Why is the addition of pesticides and fungicides used
These prevent pests getting out of control
    Fungicides prevent fungal growth
  • Why is separating fish into different age groups and selectI’ve breeding used
    • this prevents large fish eating smaller ones
    • Selecting fast growing fish with a high protein level
    • This could also selective bread or genetically be modified for rapid growth
  • Why is biological control used
    • small fish can eat up parasites of other fish
    • E.g wrasse is a small fish that eats Luce that are parasites of salmon
