Castel's theory-online age and networked societies

• Castel believes we are living in the 'information age' an age within history where we can get any information we want online, because of this he thinks that access to all this information is going to lead to a more socially aware audience/ general public
• he thinks due to the information age, we are going to become more socially conscious of societal issues, eg climate change
• in addition, he believes this online age has created a range of networks across the globe, we are no longer thinking about problems local to us, we can create connnections with people around the world
• castells says this can result in real social change
• so in conclusion he is in favour of the internet, thinks it is going to be a huge benefit for society and can be used for the greater good
• he used the term 4th world countries, to describe the areas which do not have- internet connections
