Carbonate Test (Activity 3)

• What is Step 1 of the carbonate test?

  Pour 1cm of each of the solutions into test tubes and label them.
• What is Step 2 of the carbonate test?

  Add approximately 1cm depth of dilute hydrochloric acid to each sodium salt in turn
• What is Step 3 of the carbonate test?

  If you see bubbles – use a delivery system to transfer the gas produced to a test tube of limewater.
• What is Step 4 of the carbonate test?

  Record your results, then empty and clean the test tubes.
• What is the final step of the carbonate test?

  The observation of a cloudy-white precipitate.
