Social Support

  • One way we can resist the pressure to conform or obey is through social support.
  • In other words, by having an ally.
  • Ally- Someone else who resists.
  • Having an ally means that the person has someone to help support their point of view and can build their confidence in remaining independent.
  • Conformity: Individuals who have support for their point of view(POV) no longer fear being ridiculed, meaning they can avoid the normative social influence.
  • However, this effect is only short-term, If a dissenter returns to conform, so does the naïve ppt.
  • Dissenter= The ALLY
  • Obedience- Individuals who have support for their POV are less likely to obey orders and feel better able to relift the pressure, if there's another person who also does not obey.
