Explanations for conformity

  • Supporting evidence for informational social influence
    Lucas et al (2006)- found that when participants were asked hard maths questions and then shown other peoples answers. They were more likely to conform in order to be right.
  • Unanimity- normative social influence
    People conformed due to feeling self-conscious and were afraid of disapproval.
  • Practical application
    Can account for behaviour in the real world.
  • Individual differences- normative social influence
    It doesn't work for all people as some people do not care if they are liked or not.
  • Overlap of the explanations
    It is difficult to conclude which explanation causes which type of conformity.
