Ainsworth's strange situation

Cards (5)

  • Standardised procedure
High reliability as it can be replicated and has been done in many other cultures.
  • Validity
Attachment type is a good predictor of later attachments. For example, children with insecure attachments had a higher risk of mental health issues in adulthood.
  • Ethical issues
The study involves making the children deliberately stressed and this may cause them psychological harm.
However, this causes no greater stress than if children were left with a babysitter.
  • Culture bound
It is designed for British and American cultures and this method may not be appropriate for studying attachment in different cultures.
  • Lab study
    Lack ecological validity
