Romainian orphan studies

Cards (5)

  • Practical applications
Lead to policy changes and led to improvements in the way children in care are cared for.
This is because early adoptions lead to the best outcomes.
  • Lacks validity
Children were not randomly assigned to conditions. So confounding variables may have occurred.
  • Genersiablity
Standards of care was very poor in the Romanian orphans and this may not be applicable to all institutions.
  • Methodological issues
It is difficult to draw conclusions because children were not studied while in the orphanage, so it is hard to tell which parts of institutionalisation had the greatest impact.
  • Long term affects are still being discovered
For example, in 2017, children that had been in institutions for more than 6 months had difficulty in social relations and were more likely to develop mental health issues. However, they caught up in terms of IQ.
