Deviation from social norms

Cards (2)

  • Social norms change over time
For example, homosexuality is socially accepted in society now but wasn’t before 1973. This definition allows mental illnesses to be shaped by current attitudes, which may result in unfair treatment and abuse of human rights.
  • Culturally dependent
In some cultures some statistical infrequent behaviours like hearing voices is considered normal in other countries. This could lead to different diagnoses across different cultures.
