Social learning theory

  • Supporting evidence
This is from controlled research such as Bandura’s research that demonstrates the social learning theory. This increases the validity of the study.
  • Account for cultural differences
For example, low levels of aggression observed in the! Kung people in South Africa where parents do not use physical punishment and there is no value placed on aggressive behaviour. This adds credibility to the theory as an explanation.
  • Lab study
Bandura's research lacks ecological validity because the controlled environment does not reflect real life.
  • Role of biology is ignored
This is because the social learning theory cannot explain the gender differences found by Bandura ( boys were more aggressive than girls ).
  • Free will v determinism
This approach emphasises the role of cognitive mediational processes that were neglected by behaviour. This means that the Social learning theory suggests that people have more free will over their behaviour.
