• macbeth visits the witches and they show him 3 apparitions that provide him with prophecies 
• first apparition - a floating head warns macbeth to beware of macduff 

  second apparition shows a bloody child telling macbeth that no man born of a woman can hurt him

  third apparition shows a crowned child holding a tree that tells macbeth he’ll be safe until birnam wood comes to dunsinane hill
• after macbeth learns that macduff went to england to join malcolm macbeth orders the murder of macduff wife and children
• lady macbeth is affected by guilt and madness and she sleepwalks and she tries to wash blood off her hands - “Out damned spot”
• malcolm and macduff gather an army to prepare for battle with macbeth
