Hungarian Uprising+ Secret Krushchev Speech

• The bald butcher(Rakosi) Was in charge

  of communist party in Hungary, people held a protest, people were angry of the control of communism, then became violent, pulled down a statue in budapest. Krushchev had to solve this and put Imre Nagy in control of this problem
• Imre Nagy called for

  • Freedom of speech
  • Declared Hungary will leave Warsaw pact
  • wanted voting and democratic relationships
• Khrushchev was angry about Nagy and sent in 200000 troops into Budapest in 1956,
• How did the Hungarians retaliate to the invasion?

  All people took up arms and fought
• Consequences of Uprising were:

  • 3000 Hungary's killed
  • Nagy and officials executed
  • displayed that USA was not willing to help eastern European countries
  • threat to other countries
  • Khrushchev could be more brutal as he knows USA was not going to interfere
  • USA look weak
• The secret Speech by Khrushchev was before the Hungarian Uprising, in 1956, Khrushchev talked about De-Stalinisation, which created a temporary thaw between the two superpowers when it wasn't secret anymore (it got printed out)

  However he dealt with the uprising like Stalin would so it doesnt make sense
