  a clamp stand, two bosses and a clamp
• what do we place on the clamp stand and why?

  a heavy weight to stop it falling over
• what do we attach to the clamps?

  a metre ruler and a spring
• what is the first thing we measure?

  the initial length of the spring, this is the unstreched length
• what is the first weight we add to the spring?

  1N
• what do we do after adding the 1N weight to the spring?

  we find the new length
• what do we do after adding 1N and measuring it?

  continue adding 1N weights to the spring and measuring its length
• how do we find the extension produced?

  subtract the length of the unstreched spring from each measurement
