  • What is CBT? ( Cognitive behavioural therapy )
    Cognitive element: begins with assessment to clarify client's problems, then plan to identify negative schemas that need changing
    Behavioural element: planning and performing behaviours to alter negative thinking
  • What is REBT?
    Extends the ABC model to ABCDE, D for dispute and E for effect
    REBT works by disputing irrational thoughts through vigorous arguement.
  • What are the two types of argument used in REBT
    Empirical argument - disputing whether there is evidence to support the irrational belief.
    Logical argument - disputing whether the negative thought actually makes sense from the facts available
  • how do relapse rates limit CBT
    1. High relapse rates
    2. Ali study assessed depression in over 400 clients every month for 12 months after CBT, 42% relapsed within 6 months of ending treatment, 53% relapsed within a year
    3. Limits as CBT may need to be repeated periodically
