  • Murray defined NEEDS as potentiality or readiness to respond in a certain way under certain given circumstances
  • NEEDS energize and direct our behaviors
  • NEEDS activate behavior in direction to satisfy the needs
  • NEEDS may arise either from INTERNAL PROCESSES (such as hunger) or FROM EVENTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT
  • Murray identified two types of needs
    1. Primary Needs (Viscerogenic Needs)
    2. Secondary Needs (Psychogenic Needs)
  • VISCEROGENIC NEEDS (Primary Needs) are based on biological demands
  • VISCEROGENIC NEEDS (Primary Needs) arise from internal bodily processes
  • VISCEROGENIC NEEDS (Primary Needs) are needs for AIR, FOOD, WATER, LACTATION, and URINATION
  • PSYCHOGENIC NEEDS (Secondary Needs) are needs evolved from primary needs
