• TV sets in thousands increased from 495 in 1955 to 3655 in 1965
• increase in transport and quality of trains
• system under Stalin saw little change
• productivity low and quality was poor
• K created more hierarchy
• when K was removed, structure dismantled
• largely 'car free society' so nowhere near west
• The Novocherkassk massacre on June 1962: workers organised labour strikes at building factory over increased production and quotas, poor working conditions and discontent
• Events at Novocherkassk massacre created mass protest where armed forces had to disperse protestors with gunfire
