  • differences in characteristics (variation) can be due to genes you have inherited, environmental causes or a combination of both
  • We use bar charts to present discontinuous (in distinct groups) variation and histograms for continuous variation
  • lamarck believed that:
    • organisms changed because they wanted to survive
    • organisms can never become extinct
    • organisms could decide to change something about their body and pass on that to their offspring
  • darwin believed that
    • the was variation in a population
    • certain traits helped organisms survive and reproduce better than those without those certain traits
    • parents are only able to pass on traits that they were born with
  • darwin and lamarck believed that
    • organisms have changed over time
    • the environment had something to do with why organisms changed
    • parents are able to pass on at least some of their offspring
    • organisms are still changing
  • lamarck's theory of evolution:
organisms acquire changes during their lifetime. these changes are favourable/make them better. the newly acquired characteristics are passed on to the offspring
  • extinction is when there are no remaining individuals of a species still alive
