  • Procedure:
The study involved 172 participants (female and American).- Unrepresentative
  • In groups of 6, ppts were asked to estimate the colour of 36 slides.
  • All of the slides were blue, but of differing brightness/intensity.
  • Only 4 of the ppts were real (didn't know what the study was about), the other two ppts were confederates.
  • 4 ppts were the majority.
    2 confederates the minority.
  • There were two conditions; consistent and inconsistent.
  • In the consistent condition, the two confederates stated that the slides were green on every occasion.
  • In the inconsistent condition, the two confederates stated that the slides were green on 24 trials and blue on 12 trials.
  • 24/36---- 2/3
    12/26-----1/3
  • Findings:
It was found that in the consistent condition, 8.4% of the ppts agreed with the confederates and stated that all of the slides were green.
  • In the inconsistent condition, only 1.3% of the ppts agreed with the confederates.
  • Overall, 32% of the ppts stated that a slide was green on at least one occasion.
  • Conclusion:
This shows that CONSISTENCY is an important factor in influencing a majority.
