  • Mouth- where food enters. It is the first part of the digestive system.
  • Salivary glands- produce saliva that contains enzymes (amylase), which break down food.
  • Oesophagus- muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It pushes food down by contractions, called peristalsis.
  • Liver- produces bile, detoxifies the blood and processes absorbed foods.
  • Bile- neutralises stomach acid, is alkaline and emulsifies fat.
  • Stomach- muscular organ where digestion continues. Protease is also produced here.
  • Pancreas- breaks down proteins, carbs, fats and where all digestive enzymes are produced.
  • Small intestine- produces protease, amylase, and lipase. It is also where small soluble products are absorbed into the blood through the walls.
  • Large intestine- processes waste, as faeces pass through, water in absorbed into the blood.
  • Rectum- where faeces/stool is stored
  • Anus- where faeces leaves the body.
  • Gallbladder- stores excess bile before release into the small intestine.
