  • MR-is a central value associated with being a citizen in the UK.It is upheld by legislation and British values to prevent discrimination of minority groups.
  • MR- is important for understanding the views and beliefs of others, creating the equality and courtesy which are needed for social cohesion.(in a Diverse society)
  • Tolerance-is important for the ability to accept &live alongside others who hold beliefs or opinions you may not agree with ,to create an inclusive society.(in a Diverse society)
  • Promoting British values:
    Individuals who live by basic British values create cohesive communities in the UK.NO discrimination is allowed against others.
    The Department for Education states that all have a duty to promote the British values of:
    • Democracy
    • upholding the RULE OF LAW
    • a belief in INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY
    • mutual RESPECT and TOLERANCE of those with different faiths and beliefs.
  • Effects of inequality:
    when an individual, group or community is discriminated against they can become isolated from the community.E:g
    • the GENDER PAY GAP-men are paid & promoted more than women
    • AGEISM-refusal of some medical treatments to those aged 75 and over
    • RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION -workplaces not accommodating religious customs
    • GENDER REASSIGNMENT DISCRIMINATION- toilets only provided for men and women.

  • The role of the EQUALITY ACT 2010 in preventing discrimination:
    Passed to consolidate previous discrimination acts in the UK, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and Race Relations Act 1976.
    • it prevents discrimination, harassment and unfair treatment of individuals within the nine protected characteristics
    • it protects people in educational establishments, the workplace, public offices, shops or businesses, and on public transport.
  • UPHOLDING MUTUAL RESPECT:
    • the police monitor and record hate crimes, from verbal abuse to physical assault
    • free legal advice for civil law, including discrimination, is provided by citizens' advice
    • victims of discrimination have the option to pursue complaints through civil courts.
  • Explain one way that mutual respect is upheld as a central value underpinning life for UK citizens.
    one way that mutual respect is upheld is through laws such as the Equality Act 2010. The Equality Act protects people from discrimination such as sexism,racism,ageism and homophobia.
