  • Development of Key Human Rights Legislation:
Human rights protections developed after World War II to prevent injustice and promote freedoms worldwide. Several key laws and treaties have shaped human rights in the UK:
    1. UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948)
    • Created by the United Nations (UN) to prevent future atrocities like the Holocaust.
    • Established 30 universal human rights (see Page 14).
    • 2.ECHR (European Convention on Human Rights, 1953)
    • Provides human rights protections for UK citizens.
    • Ratified by the Council of Europe.
    • Led to the creation of the European Court of Human Rights.
    • 3.UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1990)
    • Recognizes that children (under 18) are more vulnerable and need specific protections.
    • Covers education, family life, law, and order.
  • 4.HRA (Human Rights Act, 1998)
    • UK law that ratified the ECHR into national law.
    • Allows UK citizens to raise human rights concerns in UK courts instead of going to the European Court of Human Rights.
  • The Future of UK Rights:
There has been political debate about the Human Rights Act (HRA):
    • David Cameron & Theresa May criticized the HRA, claiming it gives too many protections to criminals, including terrorists.
    • Proposals have been made for a British Bill of Rights to replace it, which would be tailored to UK society.
