  • Why was the Grant introduced?
    The Romans recently captured the French King, Henry saw this as an opportunity to invade. However money was tight already from previous war, and what can TW do , he already introduced taxes
  • What was the Amicable grant?
    It was a onetime tax, people had 10 weeks to pay
    • Priests must pay 1/3 of their annual wage
    • Anybody else must pay 1/6 of their wage
  • Why was the Grant controversial?
    • It was done non-parliamentary,
    • People cant pay that amount in 10 weeks
    • H8 claimed not knowing about this
  • What were the consequences of the Grant?
    • Rebellions and anger
    • especially in Suffolk where a full-scale rebellion occurred with 10000 men gathering, eventually the Duke of Suffolk and Duke of Norfolk had to arrive and negotiate.
    • H8 ordered the tax to stop, therefor had to scrap plans with France
  • What was the Impact on Henry after this?
    • He lost trust with TW, he must question whether he is loyal
    • He was embarrassed, it seemed he couldn't control TW
    • Henry had experienced his first true Rebellion

    • He lost face
    • Enemies now had a reason to talk bad about him to king, and influence King more
    • TW no longer able to deal with Taxes
    • Forced to take responsibility
