    Monarchists and constitutional monarchists, as well as the left and the far left

    A radical lawyer in the National Assembly who eventually became its President. He was rendered a moderate by 1791 and formed the Feuillants, but was executed in 1793

    A lawyer who was first elected to the Estates-General. He had the nickname "the Incorruptible". He opposed the 1792 war, joined the CPS in 1793, and was guillotined in 1794
  • Noble political faction under constitutional monarchy?
    Met at the Salon Francais. They defended the monarchy
  • The Society of 89?
    A club of constitutional monarchists founded by Sieyes. They met at the Palais-Royal and charged a high entry fee, so its members included Lafayette and Mirabeau
  • Condorcet?
    A philosopher and mathematician. He was a Girondin and died mysteriously in 1794
  • The Jacobin Club under constitutional monarchy?
    A left wing political club that met daily after Assembly proceedings. Jacobin clubs quickly spread throughout France and they became more radical. Members were initially bourgeoisie as membership fees were high, but this changed in October 1791
  • Feuillant Club?
    A moderate alternative to the Jacobin Club. It was dissolved in November 1793 during the Terror
  • Cordeliers Club?
    The most left-wing club. It had a low entry fee, and accepted women and passive citizens as members. Danton, Desmoulins and Marat were in this club. It fostered radical republican ideas, and collapsed in 1794
  • Danton?
    He helped to form the Cordeliers Club and encouraged the September Massacres. He became the first President of the CPS, and was executed the following year
