Public baths where Romans could bathe and socialize together. The water was heated underneath the baths with help of the hypocaust
Atmosphere of the baths
Everyone even slaves were allowed in the baths making it a classless atmosphere where people don't feel insecure about their social status, providing everyone with an opportunity to meet people of all classes
Caldarium
Hottest room in the bath with temperatures of above 40 degrees. People would cover themselves in oil and it was similar to a sauna room today
Tepidarium
The slightly cooler, medium heat room for people to relax, chat and possibly receive a massage from their slave. Here they would scrape off the previously applied oil with a strigil
Fridgidarium
The cold room for people to feel refreshed. They would only quickly plunge in and out of the cold water
Apodyterium
The cloakroom for people to leave their clothes before entering the baths (thief's were common here)
Decoration of Baths
Mosaics, sculptured and paintings referencing Roman Gods, well-known Romans or political figures e.g. Julius Caesar often to trigger propaganda
