audience appeal / gratifications

Cards (1)

  • As crime dramas deal in dark and often taboo content, there is an
element of voyeurism in the viewing experience. The viewers are
shown events that they are not usually able or allowed to see,
including, potentially, things that people would actively avoid in their
real-world experiences. Episode 1 of The Killing offers Nanna’s fear
and terror and Pernille and Theis's grief and anguish, as well as Sarah
and Jan’s horror and dismay when Nanna’s body is discovered. The
characters’ emotional journeys provide a vicarious gratification for the
    audience.
