    • Strength - The FBI profiling method has also been used for other crime such as burglary and organised crime. Although it has been widely criticised because of its somewhat limited application, it has lead to an 85% increase in burglaries being solved.
    • Strength - Canter et al used a technique called smallest space analysis to look at 100 US murders each committed by a different offender. This was used to determine if there were any features of the crime that were common. These included things like torture, use of a weapon and assault. Canter found that there was a common subset of features of many serial killings which would match the typology of an organised offender. This supports the top down approach as Canter's research findings match the typical characteristics of certain offenders suggested by the approach.
    • Limit - Canter's research provided flawed evidence as he used a small non-random sampling method.
