osmosis

Cards (6)

  • step 1
cut up a potato into identical cylinders and get beakers of different sugar solutions.
from pure water to 0.6mol/dm cubed
  • step 2
measure the mass of the cylinders then leave the potatos in different beakers for 24 hours
  • step 3
take them out the solution and dry them with a paper towel and measure the masses again
  • results
-if the potatos have drawn in water by osmosis, the mass will increase
-if water has drawn out the potatos, the mass will decrease
-calculate the percentage change in mass
  • variables
    -dependent- chip mass
    -independent- concentration of sugar solution
-control- volume of solution, temperature, time, type of sugar used
  • errors
    • if potatos weren't fully dried, excess water would give a higher mass
    • if water evaporated from beakers, the concentrations of sugar solutions would change
