• England was very wealthy and attractive to foreign invaders
• England was ruled by Edward the Confessor who had no heirs
• The most powerful family was the Godwins
• Edward had close ties to Normandy and had spent his childhood in exile
• North of England had a large Viking presence after periods of Viking rule including Harthacnut
• On Edwards death there were 4 main contenders to the throne
