Cell structure

Cards (14)

  • What is a eukaryotic cell?
Have a true nucleus. E.g. plant, animal and fungi
  • What is a prokaryotic cell?
    A cell without a nucleus. E.g. bacteria
  • Why do you stain cells?
To visualize their structures. Makes them easier to observe
  • cytoplasm
    Jelly-like. Where chemical reactions occur.
  • Nucleus
    Contains DNA
  • Cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell. Contains receptor molecules.
  • Mitochondria
    Where respiration happens
  • Chloroplasts
Contain chlorophyll which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis to occur.
  • Cell wall
    Strengths and supports the plant
  • Vacuole
    Filled with cell cap
  • Benefits of an electronic microscope
    Much higher resolution
  • Disadvantage of an electronic microscope
Expensive to buy and operate, specimen’s have to be dead
  • Using a light microscope
    1. Move stage to lowest position
    2. Select objective lens with lowest
    magnification
    3. Place the slide onto the stage
    4. Turn the coarse focus knob slowly until
    you see the specimen
    5. Turn the fine focus knob slowly until
your object comes into clear focus
    6. Repeat using the higher magnifiCation objective lenses
  • Magnification if the microscope
magnification of eyepiece × magnification of objective
