  • what did Bowlby conclude?
    Bowlby concluded that the children would not have become offenders if they had no experiences that were harmful to healthy development. Bowlby subscribed to the psychoanalytic view that early experiences are of vital importance to later development
  • Bowlby particularly stressed the importance of the relationship with the mother and its impact in emotional development. he proposed that damage to the relationship with the care giver can affect development of the SUPEREGO which can lead to a reduced sense of right/wrong
  • implications for treatment
    if findings are correct, implication is that treatment should be offered to delinquents, though this process is extremely slow & difficult. the earlier a diagnosis is made the for treatment
    prevention is better than treatment, HOWEVER prolonged separation of mother & child may be unavoidable
