Tests for anions

• Tests for Halide ions

  Dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solution

  • Chloride - white precipitate (silver chloride)
  • Bromide - cream precipitate (silver bromide)
  • Iodide - yellow precipitate(silver iodide)
• Tests for carbonates

  Barium chloride solution - white precipitate

  Hydrochloric acid - fizzing (carbon dioxide gas)
• Tests for sulfate ions

  Barium chloride solution - white precipitate (barium sulfate)

  Dilute hydrochloric acid - white precipitate will not dissolve (sulfate not carbonate)
