MURRAY - INFLUENCES OF PSYCHOGENIC NEEDS

Cards (3)

  • Each need is important in itself but needs can be interrelated, can support others needs and can also conflict with other needs

Example: the need for dominance may conflict with the need for affiliation when overly controlling behavior drives away friends, family, and romantic partner
  • Murray also believed that environmental factors play a role in how these psychogenic needs are displayed in behavior
  • Murray calls these environmental forces “PRESSES”
