the brain

Cards (9)

  • what is the brain?
    • the brain controls complex behaviour. it is made of billions of interconnected neurones and has different regions for different functions
  • what is the function of the cerebral cortex?
    • the outer part of the brain - it is responsible for consciousness, intelligence, memory and language
  • what is the function of the medulla?
    • controls unconscious activities like breathing and your heartbeat
  • what is the function of the cerebellum?
    • responsible for muscle co-ordination
  • the brain diagram
    brain
  • studying patients with brain damage
    • if a small part of the brain has been damaged, the effect this has on the patient can tell you a lot about what the damaged part of the brain does
  • electrically stimulating the brain
    • the brain can be stimulated electrically by pushing an electrode into the tissue and zapping it with electricity. by observing what happens when each part is stimulated, its possible to get an idea of what each part does
  • MRI scans
    • an MRI machine can produce a very detailed picture of the brain's structures. scientists use it to find out which parts of the brain are active when doing activities or for recollection
  • issues with brain study?
    • the complexity and delicacy of the brain make investigating and treating brain disorders very difficult
    • brain function could be affected
    • however, electrical stimulation of the brain can be beneficial - electrical stimulation can reduce muscle tremors caused by Parkinson's disease
